Summer Recruiting Tip: KIT with Employers!

KIT (my favorite yearbook acronym) = Keep In Touch. Don’t fall off of your favorite employer's radar – resolve to have one touch point with your professional contacts this summer! The summer months are a great hiatus from school for many of you, but don't treat them as a hiatus from recruiting until you accept an offer.

Although the recruitment process is a little quieter when school is not in session, it does not stop until you accept an internship offer.  If you're not attending SLPs, here are some things you can do to make sure you remain under consideration.

        • Will you be visiting your desired internship city this summer?  If so, contact the recruiter to see if you can swing by the office to say hello. Be prepared for them to say they won't have capacity to host you (or the office may not be open to the public), BUT they may also say yes!
        • Have an updated resume with a new and improved GPA or impressive accomplishment?  Send it to your recruiting contacts to make sure they know the progress you made spring semester!
        • Want to plan ahead for fall recruiting events?  Send your recruiting contact an email later this summer to say you’re looking forward to seeing them this fall.  Mention that you’d love to be included in any events they are planning to host.  Hopefully they’ll respond with some dates you can mark on your calendar.
        • No real excuse to email your professional contacts?  Not to worry, just send an email to say hello and that you hope they are having a relaxing summer.

Be cognizant of how much communication you have with employers.  Avoid none at all, and certainly avoid becoming a stalker.  My advice is to reach out once, and hopefully the employer will reciprocate with another check-in.  Happy KIT’ing!
