Academically, Dr. Abernethy has more than 50 refereed publications in outlets such as the Journal of Advertising , Journal of Advertising Research , Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising , Journal of Public Policy and Marketing , and the Journal of Business Research among others. He is currently on the multiple editorial review boards of Advertising, Marketing Education and Marketing Public Policy journals. He was named outstanding reviewer for the Journal of Advertising in 1998 and of Marketing Education Review in 2012. Professor Abernethy has won the best paper award at the Journal of Advertising and the Journal of Public Policy and Marketing .
He is a former Vice-President of the American Academy of Advertising and edited the
annual proceedings. His research on advertising information, media planning, advertising
public policy and the yellow pages are included in many advertising textbooks. He
has taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate classes and has won numerous
awards for teaching excellence. In the last twenty years most of his teaching has
been in the sales field and many former students have had great career success in
Dr. Abernethy has been teaching Selling and Sales Management at the undergraduate, MBA and Executive Education levels for decades. His sales cases and data based sales management exercises have been used in textbooks and at many universities in sales education.
Dr. Abernethy has testified in Federal Court on multiple marketing, advertising, branding and marketing public policy issues. He has also helped many businesses improve their marketing, sales, and profitability. In addition, he has developed multiple sub-divisions and other real property investments for many years.
