Why Major in Marketing?
Marketing involves all the activities that results in your enjoyment of life. The movies you watch, the clothing that you wear, the restaurants that you visit are all impacted by marketing and understanding of consumer wants and needs. Today marketing is driven by information technology and analytics. Marketing is the only revenue generation arm of most organizations. Without successful products and services, accounting, finance, and human resource management would have nothing to manage. Marketing is the development and growth of mutually beneficial relationships and the lifeblood of an organization.
At the Harbert College of Business Marketing department, we take that reality to heart—through our practical and innovative curriculum, challenging internships, and experienced faculty and staff. We aspire to inspire you to be excellent marketing practitioners and impart the latest knowledge in the fast paced and quickly changing discipline.
Harbert’s Marketing track offers coursework that emphasizes, and sharpens, our students’ interpersonal, creative, and analytical skills. Skills which are not only beneficial, but necessary, in today’s competitive climate. The Marketing major’s versatile curriculum fosters student development in a number of established and emerging disciplines, including competencies in managerial and strategic marketing, marketing management, professional sales, and retailing. With a degree in Marketing from the Harbert College, you will be able to successfully compete for some of the best marketing jobs in the market.
The Marketing major tailors curriculum to students’ specific strengths and needs, offering perspectives on how students can effectively leverage their assets on the job. To do this, students enrolled in the Marketing major complete the MBTI and Chally assessments to better gauge—and advertise—their inherent strengths.
In addition to an engaging curriculum and passionate faculty with wide breadths of experience, the Marketing major embeds industry engagement into its coursework, offering students the chance to gain valuable experience through internships and exposure to successful business people and alumni. Our major also houses the American Marketing Association, the college’s student marketing chapter, which enables students to develop a competitive advantage through professional networking and other engagement opportunities.
