2024 Tiger Giving DayThroughout their time on the Plains, Auburn students acquire the academic knowledge and practical skills to be successful in their chosen career path. However, one important piece of the “post-graduation success” equation seemed to be missing from curricula across campus – financial wellness.

But thanks to support from the Auburn Family on Tiger Giving Day, that is changing.

For over 50 years, the Harbert College of Business has been committed to graduating career ready, financially responsible citizens. Harbert faculty and administration recognized the need for a course that focused specifically on financial literacy and wellness.

Because of the generous donations made during the 2024 Tiger Giving Day, BUSI 1040 – Financial Wellness has become a reality, and now Auburn students are better prepared for life after graduation.

Funds raised during last year’s Tiger Giving Day allowed the Harbert team to create a widely offered, for-credit financial wellness course available to all Auburn students that equips them with the necessary knowledge and skills to make informed financial decisions. Adding this course to Auburn’s menu of elective courses has made it accessible to every Auburn student, regardless of major.

In collaboration with Auburn’s Biggio Center, Harbert has engineered the class to an online only format to accommodate an anticipated 1,000-2,000 students in future semesters.

“We are leveraging our world-class faculty and campus resources to create an invaluable educational experience that supports responsible financial actions while at Auburn and beyond,” stated Duane Brandon, associate dean of research and faculty affairs.

A post-course survey reported that 80% of students believed the materials they learned in the course will “have a significant impact on how they make financial decisions.”

Oliver Largue, a junior management major, noted that this course provided him with a clear understanding of the effects of financial wellness on both his personal and professional life. He mentioned that, as graduation approaches and important financial choices arise, the skills he learned from this course have improved his ability and increased his confidence to make informed financial decisions.
