What motivated you to pursue an MSF, and what stood out to you about Auburn’s program?

My motivation to pursue a Master of Science in Finance stemmed from a desire to deepen my knowledge and gain a more holistic understanding of the field. With 4 years of professional experience in corporate finance advisory and investment banking, I recognized the need to further strengthen my analytical rigor and strategic financial acumen. Auburn’s program stood out for its comprehensive curriculum and the opportunity to pursue a dual MBA/MSF degree. This dual approach promised a holistic understanding of both financial intricacies and broader business strategy, which I believed would be invaluable in navigating the global financial landscape.

Can you share a bit about your background and your experience in investment banking prior to joining the MSF program?

Prior to joining Auburn’s MSF program, I worked as a Corporate Finance Analyst and then Senior Corporate Finance Analyst at Databank Brokerage LTD, the brokerage arm of the Databank Group, one of Ghana’s leading investment banks. My role was to propose and manage capital market solutions for corporate entities in the West Africa region and the Government of Ghana. I held this position for 4 years until I came to Auburn in 2024. Prior to that, I earned my Bachelor of Commerce in Finance from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana in 2020. A significant achievement during my time at Databank was my involvement in a capital raise exceeding $4 billion (USD) for the Government of Ghana and corporate entities. I was responsible for financial analysis, modeling, due diligence, sectoral research, and building strong relationships with clients, partner firms, and institutional investors. This experience gave me a robust understanding of complex financial instruments and cross-border transactions and ignited my passion for impactful finance.

How has the MSF program enhanced your understanding of financial decision-making in a global context?

The MSF program at Auburn has profoundly deepened my understanding of financial decision-making in a global context by providing a sophisticated framework for analyzing and interpreting international financial markets and the financial management of large global entities. Building on my prior experience with capital market transactions in Africa, the program has equipped me with advanced analytical tools and a deeper grounding in global finance. Courses have delved into the nuances of international financial management, valuation, and the impact of geopolitical factors on investment decisions. This combination has enabled me to integrate diverse perspectives, refine my understanding of risk management in volatile global environments, and develop more robust strategies for navigating complex international financial challenges.

Can you share a specific class or experience that has had the biggest impact on your development?

In my Applied Financial Management course, my group and I served as Chief Financial Officers at Ford Motor Company. Each week, we functioned as a unified executive team, conducting rigorous analyses of a company’s capital structure, working capital, and long-term financial forecasts. The most challenging yet rewarding aspect was presenting our strategic recommendations to a "Board of Directors" composed of our professor and classmates, who rigorously interrogated our assumptions and financial logic. This high-stakes environment deepened my technical proficiency and fundamentally refined my ability to communicate complex financial concepts with clarity and conviction. Navigating these intense simulations taught me that a truly dynamic finance leader must not only master the numbers but also possess the interpersonal and rhetorical skills to influence decision-making at the highest levels of an organization.

What advice would you give to prospective students, especially those coming from international or finance backgrounds?

For prospective students, especially those from international or finance backgrounds, my advice is to first embrace the diversity of experiences and perspectives that an institution like Auburn offers. For international students, this means actively engaging with different cultures and academic approaches, which enriches your learning journey. For those with a finance background, view the MSF not just as an extension of your prior knowledge but as an opportunity to deepen your understanding and significantly enhance your practical toolkit. Third, take advantage of sponsored training and workshops in hard skills such as advanced financial modeling and Power BI. Also, take part in school trips that let you learn from and connect with finance professionals off campus. Lastly, leverage Auburn's robust network to connect with faculty, alumni, and peers. The collaborative environment and the insights gained from these interactions are as valuable as the coursework itself. The MSF program is an investment in your future. Make the most of every opportunity to learn, grow, and connect.

How has the MSF program influenced your career goals moving forward?

The MSF program has significantly refined and reinforced my career goals, solidifying my ambition to continue contributing to economic development through strategic finance. My initial passion for solving challenges to improve lives has been amplified by the advanced knowledge and skills I have gained here. The program has equipped me with a more sophisticated understanding of financial management, capital markets, valuation, investment analysis, and risk management, all of which are critical for impactful roles in investment banking, corporate finance, or development finance. I am now more strategically oriented, aiming for roles where I can not only execute complex transactions but also influence financial strategy and policy. The program has broadened my perspective, enabling me to consider leadership positions that require both deep financial expertise and a comprehensive understanding of business, ultimately driving sustainable growth and positive societal impact.

What aspect of the program has been most rewarding for your development, and how has it shaped your growth?

The most rewarding aspect of the MSF program for my development has been its emphasis on bridging theory and practice. This emphasis has been particularly evident in numerous case studies and in engagement with some of the most important finance leaders, both in the classroom and during off-campus visits. A recent visit to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta was especially insightful. These experiences have been immersive simulations of real-world financial challenges. They have forced me to think critically, innovate under pressure, and translate complex financial analysis into actionable business strategies. This hands-on approach has instilled greater confidence in my ability to conduct rigorous financial analysis, make sound investment decisions, and communicate complex financial insights effectively to diverse audiences. This practical orientation has been invaluable in preparing me for the demands of a dynamic finance career. Additionally, the program goes above and beyond by sponsoring high-level training, such as Power BI and advanced financial modeling. These hard skills are what top-tier firms look for, and having the program facilitate this training ensures that we graduate not just with a degree but with a competitive edge.
