My name is Austin Williams-Ayers, and I am a senior in business management. This summer, I have been fortunate to gain valuable experience during my internship with Thermo Fisher Scientific. Thermo Fisher Scientific is the world leader in serving science, with an annual revenue of $40 billion. Our Mission is “to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer.” Thermo Fisher Scientific is made up of over 125,000 employees worldwide and was recently ranked #92 on the Fortune 500 list.

The company is made up of 8 different business groups, and 24 divisions within those groups. I am on the Inside Sales team for Fisher Healthcare, also known as the Healthcare Market Division (HMD), within the Customer Channels Group (CCG) and I work out of the Houston, TX office. Our Fisher Healthcare website is essentially like Amazon.com, but specifically offers research equipment and consumable products, diagnostic testing products, analytical instruments and safety products to the Healthcare and Hospital markets.

My project for the summer involves contacting low-spend clients to learn basic information about their research labs and recommend solutions, while finding new contacts for the account, and generating leads for the account managers. Once I have spoken with the clients, I introduce them to their respective account manager and/or product specialist who can offer more information and close the sale. I am also learning how to navigate the Salesforce CRM platform to track number of calls, new contacts added, and leads generated. At the end of my internship, my report will be able to help management decide if there would be added value in having a full-time employee in this role.

The opportunity to work for an industry leader has given me great insight and allowed me to expand upon what I have learned through my business management classes. It has also given me confidence that what I have learned during my time at Auburn has helped position me well for my career after graduation. I look forward to my final year at Auburn and am optimistic about my career opportunities.
