The MSF program at Auburn helped me better understand the thought process of C-suite financial decision makers. The applied nature of the program allowed me to grasp the broader, macro picture of businesses and how financial decisions ultimately impact the company as a whole.
I also strengthened my understanding of advanced financial instruments and international financial management, which has been invaluable in developing a more well-rounded perspective on finance and business decision-making.
Meeting other professional students from around the world and collaborating on ideas and coursework was a highlight of the program. I especially enjoyed the rigorous curriculum and working with teams of both on-campus and online students to execute applied, real-world projects.
I would advise any new MSF applicant or student to avoid viewing courses simply as a way to “check the box” for an A. Read as much outside of class as you do within it, if not more, and actively apply what you’re learning through investing or other hands-on experiences.
Your personal and professional development is a full-time job, and employers can quickly distinguish between someone with true understanding and someone who simply completed the requirements. I would also encourage students to fully lean into the applied components of the program, as those experiences are where the learning really comes to life.
Auburn’s MSF is an exceptional program with professors who provide strong academic challenges while also bringing applied, real-world experience into the classroom. That combination was tremendously helpful in understanding the broader finance and business world.
The professors held us to a high academic standard, which made the learning experience outstanding. I am grateful for my experience in the Auburn MSF program.
If you’re new to finance, don’t be intimidated. Dr. Keven Yost teaches an outstanding introductory finance course (Financial Analysis). He starts with the most basic concepts and works up through highly complex financial topics, doing so in a logical, step-by-step manner that anyone can follow.
Dr. Damion McIntosh’s courses were involved, rigorous, and truly came to life through his professional experience with the Central Bank of Jamaica and his continuing consulting work with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). I can truthfully say his courses were intensive and challenging, but they had more impact on me than any other courses I’ve taken in my academic career. Overall, all of the professors were exceptional and made my experience amazing.
I also really enjoyed collaborating with students from all over the world and getting to learn about their unique cultures. Learning about international students’ professional experiences added unique and valuable context to my U.S.-based understanding. I am truly grateful to have met such amazing people who became part of my Auburn family.
