Today, Nordby serves as founder of Flume Ventures, a venture capital firm backed by influential leaders from Silicon Valley and focused on supporting innovative, high-growth companies. Through Flume, he has invested in companies including X, xAI, Discord and 1Password, helping entrepreneurs bring transformative ideas to market. His work has been featured by Bloomberg, CNBC, Yahoo, The Information and other major media outlets.
This fall, Nordby returns to Auburn as the Lowder Executive-in-Residence at the Harbert College of Business, sharing lessons learned from a career defined by reinvention, leadership and a willingness to embrace risk.
"Auburn gave me a strong foundation that shaped my career," Nordby said. "The Auburn Creed, with its focus on integrity and hard work, has guided me from my early days at Sun Microsystems, to building Greenplum, leading Playboy as president, and now mentoring and investing in future innovators through Flume Ventures.”
Nordby's career began in the technology sector at Sun Microsystems, where he quickly advanced into leadership, managing a $200 million business unit at just 24 years old. Later, he joined Greenplum, a data analytics startup that would eventually be acquired by Dell for more than $400 million during the height of the big data revolution.
From there, he made a dramatic shift into media and entertainment, becoming president of Playboy Enterprises after the company transitioned to private ownership. During his tenure, Playboy expanded globally and became one of the world's leading licensed brands, generating approximately $1.5 billion annually through licensing agreements.
Despite success across vastly different industries, Nordby says a few core principles have remained constant throughout his professional life.
"The key to life is making important decisions: choosing the right partner, managing your time wisely and staying focused on a purpose bigger than yourself," he said. "Trust, built through honesty and integrity, is essential for strong relationships with colleagues, founders, investors and partners."
He also believes that adaptability and lifelong learning are increasingly important in today's rapidly changing economy.
"Success takes hard work and often means reinventing yourself, learning new skills and focusing on the journey instead of the destination," Nordby said.
As founder of Flume Ventures, Nordby regularly works with entrepreneurs and emerging business leaders. Through his involvement with Auburn's New Venture Accelerator and Kickstart Fund, he remains deeply committed to helping others turn their ideas into companies that create jobs and economic opportunity.
That focus on entrepreneurship is a message he hopes students will embrace.
"In today's economy, having a builder's mindset gives you a big advantage," Nordby said. "Those who create jobs, not just apply for them, will lead in the future."
As automation and technological disruption continue to reshape industries, Nordby encourages students to develop differentiated skills, stay curious and view innovation as an opportunity rather than a threat.
His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, investors and business leaders is straightforward: work hard, maintain humility, lead with integrity and don't be afraid to take calculated risks.
"Your reputation is your most valuable asset, both in business and in life," Nordby said. "Stay curious, embrace lifelong learning and don't hesitate to take calculated risks. Mistakes are inevitable and serve as valuable lessons."
Through his residency at the Harbert College of Business, students will have the opportunity to learn directly from a leader whose career spans startups, global brands, boardrooms and venture capital. His message is one of courage, curiosity and leadership, providing a powerful example of what can happen when Auburn graduates pair strong values with bold ambitions.
